Chapter 17

“Lady Moran.”

Kendra glanced up to see Carlton Thomblin standing before her, dressed in a pale yellow suit with a straw boater on his head. He looked more as if he were out on a stroll through Hyde Park than hiding in a cave in Jamaica, fleeing for his life.

“It’s beginning to grow light, and I must insist that, if we are to make that ship in harbor without being murdered, we set out before full sunup.”

Kendra glanced away, her gaze moving from one clump of refugees to the next. The Rutherfords both rested against a large boulder and Lady Rutherford fussed over her husband, trying to clean a cut on his forehead. Young George leaned against the rock, his sister’s head in his lap. They had come a long way with barely their lives.

In the far rear of the cave, where the sun’s rays had not yet reached, the servants gathered among the belongings she and Thomblin had managed to bring with them. Chantal was there, too. Kendra had no great love for the woman and knew that bringing her along would only complicate matters, hinder her plan for Jefford and Madison, but she couldn’t leave her behind to be killed by a mob. Besides, more than a dozen servants and their families, there were three men with rifles, sent ahead by Jefford, outside guarding the cave.

Lady Moran was so tired she could barely keep her eyes open. Every bone in her body ached and she had a stabbing pain in her backbone. She was worried to death about Jefford and Madison. “Lady Moran,” Carlton said sharply. “Did you hear me?”

She straightened her back in the lovely Queen Anne’s chair that had belonged to her mother, one of the few pieces of furniture she had brought from Windward Bay, and stared at him with irritation. “Board the ship and draw attention to ourselves in the daylight? Certainly not,” she snapped.

“Which is precisely why we should go now.” He drew his hand in a grand motion in the direction of the old Port Royal harbor.

“Well, Carlton, that would be a cheeky idea, if we had a ship.”

“We haven’t secured a ship?” he bellowed.

Ojar, standing guard outside the cave, stuck his head inside and frowned. He wore a rifle on each shoulder.

“Keep your voice down,” Lady Moran hissed, her gaze returning to Thomblin.

“Sir.” Lord Rutherford rose and hobbled toward them, using a makeshift cane of bamboo to aid him. He drew himself up to his full height, looking far older to Lady Moran than he had only a week ago. “I must ask you not to take that tone with Lady Moran.”

“I thought we had a ship! Our voyage was supposed to be secured.” Thomblin threw his hands in the air, his tone nearly hysterical. “I’ve been dragged through
